Craft beer continues to gain popularity across the U.S. Today, craft brewers account for as much as one-fifth of total beer market sales. This is mainly due to consumer interest in locally produced items and the growing desire for innovative new flavors of beer.
Many bars and restaurants still have older draft beer systems that were designed during the Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors era. They were created specifically to dispense these types of products. Beer is very different today. There are many different styles with different levels of carbonation and acidity. Many business owners don’t realize that their older draft beer equipment just can’t handle craft beer. Today, there are newer, better draft beer systems that are specially designed to handle a wide variety of beers.
With more and more people choosing craft beer over mass-produced varieties, bars and restaurants must work extremely hard to keep up with their customer’s expectations. If you are still using old draft beer equipment now is the time to update your system!
Many craft beers are meant to be served at a warmer temperature. When craft beer is served too cold it is almost impossible to distinguish the beers unique characteristics. In order to properly serve craft beer you must have a draft beer system that allows beverages to be served at different temperatures.
How many taps?
How many beers a bar or restaurant offers depends on several different factors including bar size, sales volume and customer base. Having more taps than your bar can handle isn’t good for your business or your customers. If you don’t have the space and draft maintenance to keep your draft beer fresh, then offering 100 different beers probably isn’t for you. If you wish to offer a large amount of taps then you must be able to operate them all properly. If not, you run the risk of problems with beer temperature, taste and the wrong mixture of gases in the line.
The amount of taps you offer also depends on how busy you are. If you have 100 taps but you’re consistently busy then you won’t have to worry about your beer not being fresh. If your beer is always flavorful and you have a good variety, customers will keep coming back.
